The HEPS test unit was fed from a ladle using a special hydraulically operated valve mounted on the ladle base.
In order to observe and document dispersion the side of the HEPS unit was not installed.
The air and water flows and velocities were continuously reduced on a planned basis.
The molten metal flows were checked several times to determine the flow rate of 41 mtph at temperatures over 1650° C.
Initial tests with water:metal ratios of 1:1 produced fine material. The first series of tests were to establish the non-explosivity of HEPS.
Subsequent test series with water:metal ratios of 0.8:1 produced larger grained particles.
